Being the provincial capital, Nanjing is also the political, economic and cultural center of Jiangsu Province and an important central city in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Nanjing has developed a general industrial system featuring electronic technology, petrochemical and automobile manufacturing as the three pillar industries, and biopharmaceutical, machinery, iron and steel, food processing, textile and garments and new construction materials as the six major industries. It is an important comprehensive industrial base in East China. It ranks in the second position in the production capacity of the electronics and chemical industries in China, and in the fifth position in the industry of automobile manufacturing. Since Ford has made its new investment in Nanjing, Nanjing becomes a spot light to many automotive suppliers to explore.

Nanjing has a history of 2,470 years, serving as the capital of ten ancient dynasties and is regarded as one of the four ancient capitals in China together with Beijing, Xi’an and Luoyang, which left Nanjing with a rich historic and cultural heritage. Unique history and culture coupled with beautiful mountains, rivers and forests form the historical and humanitarian heritage of Nanjing.

The level of education and scientific research ranks 3rd next to Beijing and Shanghai. There are now 37 universities and the scientific research capabilities of some universities led by Nanjing University and Southeast University rank in the forefront nationally. There are 724 scientific research institutions, among which over 100 first-rare research centers and labs including 18 key labs, 5 state-level labs and 10 engineering research centers. There are 75 academicians, 350,000 research personnel, 300,000 college undergraduates. The number of college students out of every 10,000 population is 3.8 times that of Shanghai, 2.7 times that of Beijing.

With a developed market, active commerce and trade activities, the financial institutions in Nanjing develop fast with strong radiation functions. Besides some national special banks, national or regional commercial banks have settled down in Nanjing. There are over 1,000 banking offices. The commercial facilities are gradually improving, new-type trade is rapidly developing, and the framework of large commerce, circulation and market is forming.
