As County Executive, I have early on made the decision and commitment to build the bridge between Wayne County and selected cities in China, and seek fair and equitable trade and investment opportunities. With the inclusion of China in to the World Trade Organization, with the significant propensity of China to invest in a wide category of business opportunities, it is undoubtedly critical that we penetrate this marketplace. As the global economy heightens, Wayne County cannot afford to be an observer but an aggressive partner. By making this commitment, we have indeed become a leader in Michigan in entering the Chinese marketplace.
Recognizing the importance of the opportunity, I have established an International Business Development Division within the Department of Economic Development Department with a special emphasis on China. I have led two very successful trade delegations with significant number of businesses participating from Wayne County and the South Eastern Michigan region. We have established Business Partnership Agreements with three cities in China – Chongqing, Nanjing and Wuhan. These three cities have a strong auto industry and Ford Motor Company has large presence in the first two cities. Combined, these three cities represent about 50 million people and have demonstrated significant industrial development. As part of our agreement, we have opened offices with strong support from the city governments. This model has proven to become the most effective avenue in opening up business opportunities for our local businesses.
As we move forward, we plan to open our office in Tianjing, one of the fastest growing cities in China with a population of about 13 million.
